Once Upon a Dream

I like Disney Princesses. I'll admit it, others would never (but secretly do). I always have. I love the hard work that went behind creating each and every one. I love the concept art, the research and the final works of art. I just love it! However when I think back on all my fond memories of them, I don't really think of the way that they are marketed today. As a kid I was never into the whole Princess Collection ™ thing. I might be a bit too old to have been interested in it really. But ever since Ariel, I've loved princesses.

I'm always thinking up new ideas for projects I'd like to challenge myself to... But often times I fail to follow through. This excuse or that excuse... It always ends in another forgotten project. That's why I've decided to try a different way of approaching it. A different way for me to create something that I'll (hopefully) be proud of.

I'm going to make a book. I'm going to blog about the process of making the book. And I'm going to FINISH the book and get it printed and hopefully love it very very much. And I'm going to make it about something that most everyone gets nostalgic about, Disney Princesses.

The idea for the book came to me while browsing the Internet aimlessly looking at things I like and reading articles. While on Amazon searching for a neat concept art book to potentially buy, I found the book, The Art of the Disney Princess, A compilation illustration book by several artists giving their impression on the princesses in their own style. I simply thought it'd be fun to do something like that too.... so now I'm going to do so, simple as that.

The outline of my project is as follows:

  1. Research the princesses. There are currently 10 princesses in total. I will become familiar with each one, learning their traditional history, location of their story, time period, traditional garm, etc. I'll do studies on each princess chronologically and develop thumbnail composition ideas.

  2. Once I've figured out the best compositions for all 10 princesses, I will finalize the concepts, creating 10 full color, 6.5" x 9.5" illustrations.

  3. For each illustration, I will complete a short poem or include history about (I haven't quite figured out which one yet) the princess to accompany the drawing in the final layout.

  4. I will layout the pieces I've created in a illustrative book. I will also design the cover, title and other elements that go along with book making.

  5. I will Blurb print the book creating a full color, fully realized concept.

  6. I will celebrate~~~!

The rules may change here and there as the concept grows but the overall idea will not be changed.

I intend to chronicle this process here on this blog as a record of what I've done. I'll TRY to upload every week at LEAST once, hopefully more though. I hope that somewhere, someone out there will follow me in my adventure to the final product. :)

All that said, today is the first day of Project Princess! ♥
